Which mountain range contains the highest peak in North America, Denali?

The Alaska Range contains Denali, the highest peak in North America.

Denali rises to about 6,190 metres (20,310 feet) above sea level and stands in the interior of Alaska within Denali National Park and Preserve. The Alaska Range itself stretches for roughly 600 miles from the Lake Clark area toward Canada’s Yukon Territory.

The range is part of the American Cordillera, the connected mountain system running along the western side of North and South America. Its dramatic peaks were shaped by uplift, glaciers, and tectonic activity, including forces associated with the Denali Fault. Denali is also famous for having one of the greatest base-to-summit rises on Earth.

The Brooks Range lies farther north in Alaska, while the Sierra Nevada and Rocky Mountains are separate ranges. Denali was officially called Mount McKinley by the U.S. federal government from 1917 until 2015, when the name Denali was restored; federal naming has since been politically disputed.
