Which mountain overlooks Wellington and is a popular lookout above the capital?

The story behind the answer

Mount Victoria is the Wellington hill that overlooks New Zealand’s capital and provides a popular lookout.

Known in Māori as Matairangi and often shortened locally to “Mt Vic,” Mount Victoria rises immediately east of central Wellington. Its summit reaches 196 metres and offers broad views across the city, Wellington Harbour, Evans Bay, and the Miramar Peninsula. The hill’s western side also gives its name to the Mount Victoria suburb.

The summit lookout can be reached by road, bus, or walking tracks from the city and Oriental Bay. The current lookout was constructed in 1964 on the former site of a signal station, and the area remains one of Wellington’s best-known viewpoints. Mount Victoria is also part of the city’s wider Town Belt recreational landscape.

The distractors are prominent New Zealand mountains or hills elsewhere: Mount Taranaki is in Taranaki, Mount Cook is the country’s highest mountain in the Southern Alps, and Mount Eden is an Auckland volcanic cone. They do not overlook Wellington in the same way.
