Rebecca Romijn played the mutant Mystique in the 2000 superhero film X-Men.
Before becoming widely known as an actress, Romijn was an established fashion model. She appeared in Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue and worked in campaigns and editorials during the 1990s. X-Men gave her a major film role as the blue-skinned shape-shifter Mystique.
Romijn returned as Mystique in X2: X-Men United, released in 2003, and X-Men: The Last Stand, released in 2006. The character’s elaborate makeup and prosthetics made the role one of the film series’ most visually distinctive parts.
The role is sometimes confused with later portrayals of Mystique. Jennifer Lawrence played a younger version of the character in the prequel films beginning with X-Men: First Class in 2011, while Romijn played Mystique in the original trilogy.
