Which model became the face of Guess after appearing in the brand’s 1989 advertising campaign?

The story behind the answer

Claudia Schiffer became the face of Guess after appearing in the brand’s 1989 advertising campaign.

The black-and-white Guess advertisements helped make Schiffer internationally famous. Their styling drew on the imagery of 1950s cinema and pin-up photography, giving Schiffer a recognizable look that stood apart from the more minimalist editorial campaigns of the period. Guess founder Georges Marciano selected her after seeing her work in fashion magazines.

Schiffer was born in Rheinberg, West Germany, in 1970. She was discovered in a Düsseldorf nightclub at age 17 and moved quickly into major European fashion work. Her resemblance to Brigitte Bardot was frequently mentioned by the press, although Schiffer developed her own modeling identity.

The Guess campaign is often mixed up with Cindy Crawford’s Pepsi advertising or Eva Herzigová’s Wonderbra campaign. Those campaigns also made models widely recognizable, but Schiffer’s major commercial breakthrough was specifically tied to Guess.
