Which mission conducted the first private spacewalk in September 2024?
Answer
Polaris Dawn
Answer
Polaris Dawn
Polaris Dawn conducted the first private spacewalk in September 2024.
The SpaceX mission launched on September 10, 2024, aboard a Falcon 9 from Kennedy Space Center. Its Crew Dragon spacecraft, Resilience, carried Jared Isaacman, Scott Poteet, Sarah Gillis, and Anna Menon into an unusually high Earth orbit.
Isaacman and Gillis performed the spacewalk on September 12. Because Crew Dragon has no traditional airlock, the entire cabin was depressurized and the astronauts wore specially designed SpaceX spacesuits. They took turns exiting through the spacecraft’s forward hatch while the other crew members remained inside.
Polaris Dawn also tested communications using Starlink satellites and reached an apogee of about 1,400 kilometers, higher than any crewed Earth orbit since the Apollo program. The mission was the first of the Polaris Dawn series funded and commanded by Isaacman.
