Which Metallica song was originally written as an instrumental for The Black Album?
Answer
My Friend of Misery
Answer
My Friend of Misery
My Friend of Misery was originally written as an instrumental for Metallica, commonly known as The Black Album.
Bassist Jason Newsted wrote the song's main riff. He had hoped to contribute an instrumental to the album, continuing a tradition in which earlier Metallica records included extended instrumental pieces such as Orion. During development, however, the band turned the idea into a vocal song.
James Hetfield wrote the lyrics, and the finished track became the eleventh song on the original album sequence. Its opening bass-led character remains one of the record's most distinctive arrangements, although it is not an instrumental in the released version.
This fact is often mixed up with Nothing Else Matters, which includes orchestral participation, or with The Struggle Within, the album's closing track. My Friend of Misery is specifically the song whose origin began with Newsted's intended instrumental concept.
