“Sad but True” was issued as the fifth commercial single from Metallica’s The Black Album.
The album’s five commercial singles were “Enter Sandman,” “The Unforgiven,” “Nothing Else Matters,” “Wherever I May Roam,” and “Sad but True.” The sequence helped keep the album prominent through an unusually long promotional cycle.
“Sad but True” is built around a slow, massive guitar riff and lyrics about domination, manipulation, and psychological control. Its weight and deliberate pace made it a defining example of the album’s move away from the faster attack of Metallica’s earlier work.
“Don’t Tread on Me” was also sent to rock radio, but it was not released as a commercial single. That distinction is why it is not counted among the album’s five commercial singles.
