“The God That Failed” is the Metallica song on The Black Album written about James Hetfield’s mother and Christian Science beliefs.
Hetfield’s mother died of cancer after refusing medical treatment because of her Christian Science faith. The experience influenced the song’s title and its critical treatment of religious beliefs that, in his view, had prevented her from seeking conventional care.
The track is one of the album’s darker and more personal compositions. Its heavy, deliberate riff and confrontational lyrics contrast with more outward-looking songs such as “Wherever I May Roam” and the relationship-centered “Nothing Else Matters.”
The title is sometimes confused with other spiritually themed Metallica songs. “The God That Failed” is specifically associated with Hetfield’s family experience and was not a song written about a fictional character or a general mythological story.
