Which Metallica song on The Black Album began as an instrumental written from Jason Newsted's main riff?

The story behind the answer

“My Friend of Misery” began as an instrumental built around Jason Newsted's main riff on Metallica's The Black Album.

Newsted had brought the central riff to the band, and the piece was originally intended to continue Metallica's earlier tradition of including an instrumental track. Instead, the group developed it into a vocal song and added lyrics credited to James Hetfield.

The finished recording appears as track 11, immediately before “The Struggle Within.” Its darker, reflective mood distinguishes it from the album's most direct singles, while its prominent bass foundation preserves the importance of Newsted's original contribution.

The song is sometimes mistaken for an instrumental because of its extended opening and atmospheric arrangement. It is not instrumental on the finished album: Hetfield sings throughout the main vocal sections, and the official credits list Newsted among the songwriters.
