Which Metallica member played bass on the 1991 self-titled album?
Answer
Jason Newsted
Answer
Jason Newsted
Jason Newsted played bass on Metallica's 1991 self-titled album.
Newsted had joined Metallica in 1986 after the death of bassist Cliff Burton. He first appeared on the group's The $5.98 E.P. – Garage Days Re-Revisited and then played on ...And Justice for All. The Black Album was his second full-length Metallica studio album.
A common mix-up comes from the album's production history. Producer Bob Rock played bass on St. Anger after Newsted had left the band, but Rock did not replace Newsted on The Black Album. Robert Trujillo joined Metallica later, in 2003, and first appeared on a Metallica studio album with Death Magnetic in 2008.
Newsted remained a member through the Load and Reload eras before departing in 2001. His bass performance on The Black Album belongs to the classic lineup of James Hetfield, Lars Ulrich, Kirk Hammett, and Newsted.
