Jason Newsted played bass on Metallica's 1991 album, commonly called The Black Album.
Newsted had joined Metallica in 1986 after the death of bassist Cliff Burton and had already appeared on the 1987 Garage Days EP and 1988's ...And Justice for All. The Black Album was his second full studio album with the band.
Although Newsted performed the bass parts, the album's credits and production history are often discussed alongside the unusually quiet bass presence on ...And Justice for All. The Black Album gave the instrument a more audible role in the band's polished, heavier mix.
Robert Trujillo did not join Metallica until 2003, so he was not involved in these sessions. Burton had died in 1986, while Ron McGovney had left the band years earlier. Those timeline differences make Newsted the only correct bassist for this album.
