Which Metallica bassist performed on the 1991 album known as The Black Album?
Answer
Jason Newsted
Answer
Jason Newsted
Jason Newsted performed bass on Metallica's 1991 album, commonly known as The Black Album.
Newsted joined Metallica in 1986 after the death of bassist Cliff Burton. He had already appeared on the 1987 Garage Days Re-Revisited EP and ...And Justice for All, making Metallica his second full studio album with the band.
The Black Album is notable for giving the bass a more audible and substantial role than the previous record. Producer Bob Rock wanted the instrument to contribute more low-end weight, and Newsted's playing became part of the album's fuller, more balanced production. This change is often discussed when comparing the two albums.
Newsted remained Metallica's bassist until 2001. He was later replaced by Robert Trujillo, who joined the band in 2003. That later lineup is sometimes incorrectly associated with The Black Album because Trujillo became a highly visible member of Metallica, but Newsted is the bassist credited on the 1991 recording.
