Which Metallica band member played bass on The Black Album?

Jason Newsted played bass on Metallica's 1991 album, commonly called The Black Album.

Newsted joined Metallica in 1986 after the death of bassist Cliff Burton. He had already appeared on the 1987 cover EP The $5.98 E.P.—Garage Days Re-Revisited, but The Black Album was his first Metallica studio album of newly written original material.

The album's core lineup consisted of James Hetfield, Lars Ulrich, Kirk Hammett, and Newsted. Newsted contributed bass performances and songwriting, although the band's principal songwriting credits remained concentrated among Hetfield and Ulrich, with Hammett involved on several compositions.

Listeners sometimes identify Robert Trujillo because he later became Metallica's bassist in 2003. Cliff Burton was the bassist on the band's first three studio albums, but he died before Newsted joined. Ron McGovney was Metallica's first bassist and did not play on The Black Album.
