Metallica was the first album to feature “The God That Failed” as a publicly heard song.
“The God That Failed” appears on Metallica's 1991 self-titled album, commonly called The Black Album. The song was never released as a commercial single, but it was the first song from the album heard by the public, making it an unusual early preview of the record.
James Hetfield wrote the lyrics, drawing on personal experiences involving religion and his family. The song's heavy, deliberate arrangement also reflects the album's move toward slower and more controlled grooves compared with much of Metallica's earlier thrash-oriented material.
The title can cause confusion because the song is often discussed independently and was not one of the album's commercial singles. The album itself is simply titled Metallica; “The Black Album” is its widely used nickname, not its official title.
