The Oculus Quest was the first headset in the Quest line to work without a gaming PC.
Oculus Quest launched in May 2019 as a standalone virtual-reality headset. It included its own processor, storage, display, tracking cameras, and motion controllers, allowing users to run compatible VR software without connecting to a computer or external tracking sensors.
Earlier Oculus Rift systems generally depended on a capable PC, while Oculus Go was also standalone but offered simpler mobile-oriented VR and less advanced tracking. Quest combined standalone convenience with room-scale tracking and six degrees of freedom, meaning the system could track both head movement and the user’s position in space.
Facebook’s Oculus division later released Oculus Quest 2, and the product family was rebranded as Meta Quest after the parent company adopted the Meta name. Quest Pro and Quest 3 are newer products, so they are not the first Quest headset.
