Which Mesopotamian epic features Utnapishtim surviving a great flood in a boat?

The story behind the answer

The Epic of Gilgamesh features Utnapishtim surviving a great flood in a boat.

In the flood episode of the Epic of Gilgamesh, the god Ea warns Utnapishtim to build a large boat and preserve life from an impending catastrophe. After the flood, Utnapishtim releases birds to learn whether the waters have receded.

The episode is one of the most important ancient parallels to the Noah story. It survives in cuneiform tablets from Mesopotamia and is especially prominent in Tablet XI of the standard version of the epic. The earlier Atrahasis Epic also contains a related Mesopotamian flood account, with the survivor named Atrahasis.

These similarities do not make the stories identical. Their gods, characters, theological purposes, measurements, and narrative details differ. The comparison is important because it places the Noah narrative within a wider ancient Near Eastern flood-story tradition.
