Which Mesopotamian city is associated with the Flood hero Atrahasis?
Answer
Shuruppak
Answer
Shuruppak
The Mesopotamian Flood hero Atrahasis is associated with the city of Shuruppak.
The Atrahasis Epic identifies its human protagonist as Atrahasis, whose name means “exceedingly wise.” In the surviving Old Babylonian tradition, he is connected with Shuruppak, an ancient Sumerian city on the Euphrates. The god Enki warns him about a catastrophic flood and instructs him to build a boat.
Shuruppak is also known from early Mesopotamian king lists and archaeological evidence. It is distinct from Uruk, Babylon, and Nineveh, which are other major cities in Mesopotamian history and literature.
Atrahasis is one of several ancient Near Eastern Flood traditions compared with the story of Noah. Similarities include divine warning, a specially built vessel, preservation of life, and a devastating flood, while names, gods, narrative details, and theological frameworks differ.
