Which men's apparatus is also commonly called the high bar?

The story behind the answer

The men’s gymnastics apparatus commonly called the high bar is the horizontal bar. It is a single rigid bar held high above the floor by vertical supports and tension cables, and gymnasts use it for powerful swings, turns, releases, and dismounts.

A typical horizontal-bar routine includes giant swings, changes of grip, flight elements in which the gymnast lets go and regrabs the bar, and a final dismount. Gymnasts often wear suede leather grips to protect their hands and improve their hold. The apparatus bar is about 240 centimetres long and is positioned roughly 278 centimetres above the floor, including the landing mats.

The apparatus has a long history. It was described in Johann Christoph Friedrich GutsMuths’s 1793 book Gymnastik für die Jugend and was later developed through the work of Friedrich Ludwig Jahn. “High bar” and “horizontal bar” are interchangeable names; the apparatus should not be confused with parallel bars, which use two bars side by side.
