Which member of The Doors was born in Chicago?
Answer
Ray Manzarek
Answer
Ray Manzarek
Ray Manzarek was the member of The Doors born in Chicago.
Manzarek was born Raymond Daniel Manczarek Jr. on February 12, 1939, and was raised on Chicago’s South Side. His parents were of Polish descent, and his early musical development included playing piano in a jazz band while attending DePaul University.
He later moved to California, where he studied film at UCLA and met Jim Morrison. The two reunited after graduation and formed The Doors in 1965. Manzarek became the band’s keyboardist and supplied its distinctive organ parts, while also playing keyboard bass during live performances because The Doors did not have a regular bass guitarist.
The other listed members were born elsewhere: Jim Morrison was born in Melbourne, Florida; Robby Krieger was born in Los Angeles; and John Densmore was born in Santa Monica, California. Manzarek’s Chicago origin is therefore the single canonical answer, even though The Doors became strongly associated with Los Angeles.
