The Egg McMuffin gave McDonald’s its first major breakfast-branding platform in 1971.
Herb Peterson, a McDonald’s franchise owner in Santa Barbara, California, created the sandwich. It used an English muffin, a round egg, Canadian bacon, and cheese, presenting breakfast in a format that matched McDonald’s fast-service identity.
The Egg McMuffin began as a regional product before spreading through the wider McDonald’s system. Its success helped persuade the company to make breakfast a significant part of its national menu and marketing.
The product is often confused with later breakfast items such as the Sausage McMuffin, McGriddle, and Big Breakfast. Those products expanded the breakfast range, but the Egg McMuffin is the item most closely associated with McDonald’s original large-scale breakfast push.
