Answer
USC Trojan Marching Band
Answer
USC Trojan Marching Band
The USC Trojan Marching Band played on Fleetwood Mac’s 1979 single “Tusk.”
Mick Fleetwood conceived the idea of adding a marching band after hearing a brass band during a trip to Barfleur, France. Back in Los Angeles, he contacted the University of Southern California and worked with director Arthur C. Bartner and assistant director Tony Fox to develop the arrangement.
The band recorded at Dodger Stadium rather than in a conventional studio. A mobile recording unit captured 112 musicians playing outdoors, and the recording was later synchronized with Fleetwood Mac’s dense sound-effects track during mixing. The stadium setting helped create the expansive, echoing character heard on the track.
The USC band is sometimes described by its later nickname, the Spirit of Troy, but “USC Trojan Marching Band” is the name that identifies the performers on the recording. The track appeared on Tusk, Fleetwood Mac’s double album released in 1979, and the band was later presented with a platinum disc for its contribution.
