Peter Green guested on “Night Watch” from Fleetwood Mac's album Penguin.
Penguin, released in March 1973, was Fleetwood Mac's seventh studio album. Green had left the band in 1970, but he visited the group while Penguin was being mixed and recorded an additional guitar part for Bob Welch's song “Night Watch.” His contribution was uncredited on the original album liner notes.
The session took place at AIR Studios in London, where the album received overdubs and mixing. Accounts describe Green adding an atmospheric, echo-heavy guitar passage rather than returning as a full band member. His appearance was therefore a brief guest contribution during Fleetwood Mac's post-Green era.
The neighboring albums can cause confusion. Future Games came before Penguin and featured Danny Kirwan and Christine McVie in the evolving lineup; Bare Trees immediately preceded it. Mystery to Me followed Penguin later in 1973. “Night Watch” is especially notable because it reunited Green musically with his former band while retaining the band's newer Bob Welch-led direction.
