Sergej Jakirović led Hull City to victory over Manchester United in the 2026–27 Premier League opener.
Hull defeated Manchester United 2–0 at the MKM Stadium on 22 August 2026. The result marked Hull’s return to the top flight after a nine-year absence and gave the promoted club an impressive start against one of England’s most decorated teams.
Semi Ajayi opened the scoring in the 17th minute, and Nobel Mendy added a second before half-time. Both players later went off injured, but Hull held on for a clean-sheet victory.
Jakirović’s achievement carried an additional distinction: he became the first Bosnian manager to win a Premier League match. Manchester United were managed by Michael Carrick, so the two names are easy to mix up when recalling the fixture. Gary O’Neil managed Ipswich in another opening-round match, while Keith Andrews led Brentford.
