Andoni Iraola began his Liverpool league tenure with a 2–2 draw at Newcastle in the 2026–27 Premier League opener.
Iraola took charge of Liverpool for the first time in a league match at Newcastle United on Sunday 23 August 2026. Liverpool drew 2–2 after Dominik Szoboszlai converted a penalty deep into stoppage time.
The appointment followed Arne Slot’s departure from Liverpool. Iraola had previously managed AFC Bournemouth, while Newcastle were also beginning a new era under Matthias Jaissle after Eddie Howe’s departure.
The match was unusually dramatic for an opening-round fixture. Newcastle scored through Anthony Elanga and Joe Willock, while Liverpool replied through Cody Gakpo and Szoboszlai. The penalty followed a foul on substitute Victor Muñoz, and the final kick ensured Iraola avoided defeat in his first league match in charge. It was also played during an emotional tribute to Kevin Keegan at St James’ Park.
