Antares was the lunar module that carried Apollo 14 astronauts Alan Shepard and Edgar Mitchell to the Moon.
Apollo 14 landed in the Fra Mauro region on 5 February 1971. Shepard commanded the lunar module, while Mitchell served as lunar module pilot. Stuart Roosa stayed in lunar orbit aboard the command module Kitty Hawk. Antares was named after the bright star Antares, whose reddish appearance made it a fitting name for a spacecraft associated with exploration.
The landing followed the aborted Apollo 13 mission, which had intended to visit Fra Mauro. Apollo 14 completed two lunar surface excursions and deployed scientific instruments, including a seismometer and a laser-ranging reflector.
Antares's descent stage remained on the Moon. Its ascent stage was later intentionally impacted on the lunar surface, allowing scientists to study the resulting seismic signals. The name is distinct from Apollo 11's Eagle and Apollo 16's Orion.
