Answer
One on One Recording Studios
Answer
One on One Recording Studios
One on One Recording Studios was the main Los Angeles venue for recording Metallica's 1991 album, The Black Album.
Metallica began recording the album at One on One in North Hollywood in October 1990. The sessions lasted for months and became known for the band's demanding standards, repeated takes, and disagreements with producer Bob Rock. The studio environment allowed Rock to push the musicians toward more unified performances and a more controlled, detailed sound.
The production also included a period at Little Mountain Sound Studios in Vancouver, British Columbia. That additional location is why the album is sometimes associated with both Los Angeles and Vancouver, but One on One was the principal recording site identified with the sessions.
The album's polished sound was a major change from Metallica's earlier records. Clearer drums, more prominent bass, and carefully shaped guitar tones helped the songs work in arenas, on radio, and in home listening systems while retaining their heavy character.
