Which London skyscraper is nicknamed the “Walkie-Talkie”?
Answer
20 Fenchurch Street
Answer
20 Fenchurch Street
London’s 20 Fenchurch Street skyscraper is nicknamed the “Walkie-Talkie.”
The nickname refers to the building’s distinctive form: its upper floors are wider than its lower section, creating a curved, top-heavy silhouette. Designed by Uruguayan architect Rafael Viñoly, the tower was completed in 2014 in the City of London, the capital’s historic financial district.
The building became widely known for its Sky Garden, a public garden and observation space near the top. Its unusual shape also caused a famous construction problem: sunlight reflected from the concave south-facing façade and briefly produced extremely intense heat at street level in 2013. The issue was resolved with external shading fins.
20 Fenchurch Street is sometimes confused with other London landmarks such as the Shard, the Gherkin at 30 St Mary Axe, or the Leadenhall Building. Its informal nickname is specifically linked to its broad, curved upper profile.
