Which local government area forms the inner area of Greater Brisbane?
Answer
City of Brisbane
Answer
City of Brisbane
The City of Brisbane forms the inner area of Greater Brisbane. It is the local government area governing Brisbane’s central city and most of the metropolitan area’s inner suburbs.
Brisbane’s metropolitan region is divided among several local government areas, but the City of Brisbane is unusually dominant for an Australian capital. It covers a large area on both sides of the Brisbane River and includes the central business district, inner suburbs and many established outer suburbs. The broader Greater Brisbane area also includes councils such as Ipswich, Logan, Moreton Bay and Redland.
The present City of Brisbane was created in 1925 through the amalgamation of 20 smaller local authorities. That merger produced a single, powerful council responsible for a substantial share of the metropolitan population and infrastructure. The council is headed by the Lord Mayor of Brisbane and divided into electoral wards.
A common mix-up is treating Greater Brisbane and the City of Brisbane as identical. Greater Brisbane is the wider metropolitan area; the City of Brisbane is one local government area within it, albeit the central and largest one.
