Cody Gakpo scored Liverpool’s first goal in the 2–2 draw with Newcastle United during the 2026–27 Premier League opening weekend.
Newcastle took an early lead through Anthony Elanga at St James’ Park on Sunday 23 August 2026. Gakpo then equalised for Liverpool before Joe Willock put Newcastle back in front.
Liverpool avoided defeat when Dominik Szoboszlai scored a penalty in the ninth minute of stoppage time. The result gave both clubs a point from an eventful opening fixture.
Gakpo’s goal should not be confused with Szoboszlai’s late equaliser: Gakpo scored Liverpool’s first goal of the match, while Szoboszlai scored the team’s second and final goal. The draw was also Andoni Iraola’s first Premier League match in charge of Liverpool.
