Dominik Szoboszlai scored the late penalty that secured Liverpool’s draw at Newcastle during the 2026–27 Premier League opening weekend.
Liverpool were trailing 2–1 at St James’ Park when Victor Muñoz was fouled by Lewis Hall in the penalty area. Szoboszlai took responsibility and converted in the ninth minute of stoppage time, sending the ball into the top-left corner.
The goal made the final score 2–2 and gave new Liverpool head coach Andoni Iraola a point in his first Premier League match in charge. Szoboszlai’s penalty was particularly dramatic because the stadium was extremely loud during the kick.
He should not be confused with Cody Gakpo, who scored Liverpool’s first goal from open play. Newcastle’s two goals came from Anthony Elanga and substitute Joe Willock. The match also featured tributes to former Newcastle player and manager Kevin Keegan.
