Which Liverpool player converted the stoppage-time penalty in the 2–2 draw at Newcastle United during the 2026–27 opening weekend?

The story behind the answer

Dominik Szoboszlai converted Liverpool’s stoppage-time penalty in the 2–2 draw at Newcastle United during the 2026–27 opening weekend.

Newcastle and Liverpool drew 2–2 at St James’ Park on 23 August 2026. Szoboszlai scored from the spot in the ninth minute of added time, rescuing a point for Liverpool in one of the round’s most dramatic finishes.

Liverpool had trailed after Newcastle regained the lead through substitute Joe Willock. In the final moments, Liverpool debutant Victor Muñoz was fouled in the penalty area by Lewis Hall. Szoboszlai took responsibility and placed the penalty into the top-left corner.

Cody Gakpo had earlier scored Liverpool’s first goal with a long-range strike. Newcastle’s goals came from Anthony Elanga and Willock, while former Newcastle forward Alexander Isak was heavily booed after moving to Liverpool the previous summer.
