Which Liverpool player converted the 99th-minute penalty against Newcastle United in the 2026–27 Premier League opener?

The story behind the answer

Dominik Szoboszlai converted Liverpool’s 99th-minute penalty against Newcastle United in the 2026–27 Premier League opener.

Liverpool drew 2–2 with Newcastle United at St James’ Park after Szoboszlai scored a penalty in the ninth minute of stoppage time. The Hungarian midfielder placed the ball into the top-left corner to rescue a point.

The penalty was awarded after Newcastle substitute Victor Muñoz was fouled in the area by Lewis Hall. Szoboszlai took responsibility rather than former Newcastle striker Alexander Isak, who had moved to Liverpool the previous summer.

Cody Gakpo scored Liverpool’s earlier goal in the second half, while Joe Willock put Newcastle back in front shortly afterward. Szoboszlai’s strike was therefore the equaliser and the final goal of the match.
