LEGO Island, released in 1997, was the first LEGO video game to feature LEGO characters in a 3D adventure world.
Developed by Mindscape, the game placed players on an island populated by LEGO minifigure characters. It combined exploration with several activities, including driving vehicles, piloting a helicopter and completing missions involving the island’s inhabitants.
The game became an important early step in LEGO’s digital history because it presented a recognizable LEGO setting rather than simply using LEGO pieces as decoration. Its characters, vehicles and locations helped establish a style later used by many LEGO games.
LEGO Island is sometimes confused with LEGO Racers, which was released later in 1999 and focused primarily on racing. It is also separate from the later LEGO Star Wars series, which adapted licensed film characters and stories. LEGO Island was an original LEGO-themed computer adventure.
