Which LEGO theme, introduced in 1978, features astronauts and fictional space vehicles?

The story behind the answer

LEGO Space is the LEGO theme introduced in 1978 that features astronauts and fictional space vehicles.

The theme was one of LEGO’s original classic minifigure-era themes, arriving in the same general period as LEGO Castle and LEGO Town. Its early sets used space explorers, spacecraft, rovers, bases and lunar-style landscapes to create a science-fiction setting without being tied to a specific film franchise.

The blue, gray, white and transparent elements of early Space sets became especially recognizable, while factions such as the classic blue-and-gray astronauts helped define the theme’s visual identity. Later subthemes introduced different color schemes and groups, including Blacktron, M:Tron and Ice Planet 2002.

LEGO Space is distinct from licensed properties such as Star Wars. It is an original LEGO setting, so its spacecraft and characters are not intended to reproduce one particular real-world space program.
