Which LEGO theme was the company’s first licensed theme based on a film series?

The story behind the answer

LEGO Star Wars was the company’s first licensed theme based on a film series.

The theme launched in 1999 alongside the release of Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace. It marked a major change in LEGO’s strategy because the sets combined the company’s construction system with characters, vehicles and locations from a major entertainment franchise.

Early releases included models connected with The Phantom Menace, while later waves covered the original trilogy and other parts of the Star Wars universe. The partnership became one of LEGO’s longest-running and most commercially important licensed lines.

Harry Potter, Indiana Jones and Jurassic Park also received LEGO themes, but they came later. The theme’s name is usually written LEGO Star Wars, rather than simply Star Wars LEGO, in official product and reference contexts.
