Fabuland was the LEGO theme launched in 1979 that featured anthropomorphic animal characters.
The theme was designed for younger children and occupied a space between standard LEGO building sets and preschool-oriented products. Its characters had large animal heads and simplified bodies, while the sets focused on everyday activities such as homes, shops, transport, work, and community life.
Fabuland included story-driven play and a distinctive visual style. Rather than centering on battles or fantasy quests, it presented a small society of animal citizens whose models could be combined into connected scenes.
The theme is sometimes confused with Belville, which also targeted younger builders but used a different character format and launched later. Paradisa was another LEGO theme with a specific lifestyle setting, but it did not define its cast through Fabuland’s anthropomorphic animal figures.
