Which LEGO theme, launched in 1978, first introduced LEGO astronauts and spacecraft as its central subject?

The story behind the answer

LEGO Space was the LEGO theme launched in 1978 that first introduced astronauts and spacecraft as its central subject.

The original Space range is commonly associated with blue, white, red, and yellow elements, transparent windscreens, lunar vehicles, rockets, and astronaut minifigures. Its simple, optimistic science-fiction style became one of the most recognizable periods in LEGO history.

LEGO Space is sometimes confused with later subthemes such as Space Police, Blacktron, M:Tron, and Ice Planet 2002. Those were separate Space subthemes or factions, while the broader LEGO Space theme began in 1978.

The theme also helped establish a visual language that LEGO returned to repeatedly: modular spacecraft, tracked rovers, radar dishes, and extraterrestrial exploration. Its astronauts were not tied to a film licence, so builders could invent their own missions and planets.
