Which league sits immediately below the Premier League in England's league system?

The story behind the answer

Which league sits immediately below the Premier League in England’s league system? It is the EFL Championship.

The Championship is the second level of English men’s league football, directly beneath the Premier League. It is operated by the English Football League, alongside League One and League Two, and normally contains 24 clubs.

At the end of a season, the Championship’s top two teams are promoted automatically. Clubs finishing in the next group compete in play-offs for the third promotion place, while the bottom three are relegated to League One. The three promoted clubs replace the three Premier League teams that go down.

The FA Cup is a knockout competition rather than a league, and the National League sits below the EFL divisions. League One is also lower than the Championship, at level three, which makes it another common wrong answer when the question asks for the division immediately below the Premier League.
