Which late-night show did John Oliver host before launching Last Week Tonight?
Answer
The Daily Show
Answer
The Daily Show
John Oliver hosted The Daily Show before launching Last Week Tonight.
Oliver joined The Daily Show as a correspondent in 2006 and became a prominent contributor through political satire, field pieces and studio segments. He temporarily served as host during Jon Stewart’s absence in the summer of 2013, presenting several episodes while Stewart directed the film Rosewater.
That guest-hosting period helped demonstrate Oliver’s ability to lead a nightly satirical news program. HBO later developed Last Week Tonight with Oliver as its host, and the series premiered in April 2014. The new show used a weekly structure that allowed substantially longer reports than a typical nightly program.
Oliver was not the regular host of The Colbert Report, although he appeared in the broader Comedy Central late-night ecosystem. He also did not host Late Night, which is NBC’s franchise associated with Letterman, Conan O’Brien, Jimmy Fallon and Seth Meyers.
