What theater was home to The Late Show with David Letterman?

The story behind the answer

The Ed Sullivan Theater was home to The Late Show with David Letterman.

Located at 1697 Broadway in Manhattan, the theater became Letterman’s CBS studio when The Late Show premiered in 1993. The historic venue had previously been known as the Hammerstein Theater and later as the CBS Studio 50 building before receiving its Ed Sullivan name.

The theater’s association with television stretches back decades. It hosted The Ed Sullivan Show and became especially famous for presenting major music and variety acts. Letterman’s use of the venue connected his late-night program with that earlier broadcasting history.

Stephen Colbert later continued The Late Show at the same theater after succeeding Letterman in 2015. This is why the venue is associated with both hosts, although Letterman was the host when CBS revived the title in 1993.
