Which Japanese peninsula includes the Noto earthquake area on the Sea of Japan coast?
Answer
Noto Peninsula
Answer
Noto Peninsula
The Noto Peninsula is the Japanese peninsula on Honshu’s Sea of Japan coast that includes the Noto earthquake area.
It projects northward from Ishikawa Prefecture and has a rugged coastline, forested hills, fishing villages, and terraced rice fields. The peninsula is divided administratively mainly between Ishikawa and Toyama prefectures, with the Noto region forming its cultural and geographic core.
A major earthquake struck the peninsula on 1 January 2024, causing severe damage, landslides, fires, and a tsunami along parts of the coast. The event was widely known as the 2024 Noto earthquake. Reconstruction has continued across affected communities.
Noto is distinct from the Kii Peninsula, which is farther southwest on Honshu and is associated with the Kumano pilgrimage region. The Noto coastline is also recognized for traditional industries such as lacquerware, salt-making, and agriculture adapted to steep coastal terraces.
