Which James Bond film won the Academy Award for Best Visual Effects?

The story behind the answer

Thunderball won the Academy Award for Best Visual Effects.

Released in 1965, Thunderball was the fourth official James Bond film and starred Sean Connery as 007. Its underwater action sequences, aerial photography, explosions, and other large-scale effects helped it win the visual-effects Oscar at the 38th Academy Awards.

The film was directed by Terence Young and adapted from Ian Fleming’s 1961 novel. Bond battles Emilio Largo, played by Adolfo Celi, after SPECTRE steals nuclear weapons and threatens global destruction. Claudine Auger played Dominique Derval, also known as Domino.

Thunderball remains the only Bond film to win the Academy Award for Best Visual Effects under that category’s modern naming. Goldfinger received technical recognition elsewhere, while later Bond films earned Oscars in categories such as sound editing, sound effects, and original song. The win is therefore a precise distinction rather than a claim that Thunderball had the series’ only Oscar success.
