Which James Bond film was the first to star Pierce Brosnan as 007?

The story behind the answer

GoldenEye was the first James Bond film to star Pierce Brosnan as 007.

Released in 1995, GoldenEye marked the return of the Bond series after a six-year gap following Licence to Kill. Brosnan inherited the role from Timothy Dalton and played Bond as a mixture of polished charm, physical toughness and modern self-awareness.

The film was directed by Martin Campbell and introduced Judi Dench as M, making her the first woman to portray Bond’s superior in the official film series. It also introduced Xenia Onatopp, played by Famke Janssen, and featured Sean Bean as Alec Trevelyan.

GoldenEye is sometimes confused with Tomorrow Never Dies because both are Brosnan films from the 1990s. Tomorrow Never Dies was his second Bond appearance, released in 1997. Brosnan went on to play Bond in four official films.
