Moonraker features the villain Hugo Drax’s space station.
Released in 1979, Moonraker stars Roger Moore as James Bond and was directed by Lewis Gilbert. Bond investigates the disappearance of a space shuttle and discovers that industrialist Hugo Drax plans to use a space station as part of a scheme to destroy humanity and create a new population.
Michael Lonsdale played Drax, while Lois Chiles played CIA astronaut Holly Goodhead. The film’s production was strongly influenced by the popularity of Star Wars, which had been released in 1977. As a result, Moonraker expanded the series’ science-fiction elements and included extended sequences in orbit.
Moonraker adapts Ian Fleming’s 1955 novel, but the film’s plot differs substantially from the book. The novel is primarily a Cold War missile thriller rather than an outer-space adventure.
