GoldenEye features Alec Trevelyan, also known as Agent 006, as its principal villain.
Trevelyan is introduced as James Bond’s former colleague and fellow 00 agent. Played by Sean Bean, he appears to be killed during a mission at a chemical weapons facility, but later reveals that he survived and became the leader of Janus, a criminal organization.
The number 006 establishes Trevelyan as a peer within the British secret service rather than a random enemy. His personal history with Bond gives the conflict an added layer: both men were trained for similar work, but Trevelyan turns against Britain after learning that his parents were betrayed during the Second World War.
GoldenEye was released in 1995 and marked Pierce Brosnan’s debut as Bond. The title refers to a satellite weapon capable of generating an electromagnetic pulse, not to Trevelyan’s code number.
