Which James Bond film became the first to win an Academy Award?

The story behind the answer

Goldfinger became the first James Bond film to win an Academy Award. It received the Oscar for Best Sound Effects at the 37th Academy Awards, honoring sound editor Norman Wanstall.

Released in 1964, Goldfinger was the third Eon-produced film in the series and starred Sean Connery as 007. Its success helped establish many elements now associated with Bond films, including elaborate gadgets, memorable villains and a high-profile title song.

The Academy category was called Best Sound Effects at the time; it was later renamed Best Sound Effects Editing and eventually Best Sound Editing. Goldfinger’s win is sometimes confused with later Bond achievements, such as Skyfall’s Academy Award for Best Original Song or Spectre’s win for Best Original Song.
