Which James Bond film became the first to earn more than $1 billion worldwide?

The story behind the answer

Skyfall became the first James Bond film to earn more than $1 billion worldwide.

Released in 2012, Skyfall was the twenty-third official Bond film and the third to star Daniel Craig. It was directed by Sam Mendes, with Javier Bardem playing the villain Raoul Silva and Judi Dench returning as M.

The film passed the billion-dollar mark during its theatrical run and became the highest-grossing Bond film at that time. Its success combined strong international box-office performance with the publicity surrounding the franchise’s fiftieth anniversary.

Skyfall also received major critical recognition. It won the Academy Award for Best Original Song for Adele’s title song, making it the first Bond film to win that Oscar. Spectre later followed as a major commercial success, but it did not become the first Bond film to cross the billion-dollar threshold.
