Which island was renamed K’gari, formerly known as Fraser Island?

The story behind the answer

K’gari is the island formerly known as Fraser Island.

K’gari is a large sand island off Queensland, Australia, and its name comes from the Butchulla people, the island’s Traditional Owners. Queensland officially restored the name K’gari in 2023, replacing Fraser Island in official usage.

The island is notable for its extensive sand dunes, rainforests growing on sand and freshwater lakes. Lake McKenzie, also called Boorangoora, is one of its best-known natural features. The island’s beaches and inland tracks also support a large tourism industry.

K’gari was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1992 under its former name. It is often described as the world’s largest sand island, although its importance also comes from its living Butchulla cultural heritage and unusual ecosystems.
