Which island is the largest in the Baltic Sea and belongs to Sweden?

The story behind the answer

Gotland is the largest island in the Baltic Sea and belongs to Sweden.

Located east of mainland Sweden, Gotland covers about 3,140 square kilometres and is the largest island in Sweden. Its administrative capital and largest town is Visby, a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its exceptionally preserved medieval city walls and buildings.

Gotland’s position in the Baltic made it an important centre for trade during the Viking Age and the Middle Ages. The island is also famous for rauks, distinctive limestone sea stacks shaped by erosion, and for its annual Medieval Week in Visby.

Gotland is sometimes confused with Öland, Sweden’s second-largest island, which lies closer to the southeastern mainland. The nearby Estonian island of Saaremaa is also prominent in the Baltic, but Gotland is larger.
