K’gari is the world’s largest sand island and lies off the coast of Queensland, Australia.
The island was officially renamed K’gari in 2023, replacing the colonial name Fraser Island. The name comes from the Butchulla people, the island’s traditional owners, and is commonly translated as “paradise.” K’gari is part of the Great Sandy National Park.
Despite being made almost entirely of sand, K’gari supports rainforests, woodlands, freshwater lakes, and extensive wetlands. Its vegetation grows on ancient sand deposits, while perched lakes form where organic material creates an impermeable layer beneath the sand.
K’gari is also known for dingoes, humpback whales visible from the coast, and long beaches. It became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1992. Visitors may still encounter the older name in historical sources, maps, and tourism material.
